Engage with young workers

Hire a school-based apprentice or trainee

School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships provide students aged 15 years or older with valuable employment skills, hands-on industry experience and a nationally recognised qualification, while still completing secondary school qualifications.

What are the benefits of employing a School-Based Apprentice or Trainee?

Employing a School-based Apprentice or Trainee gives you the chance to:

  • Recruit keen young staff before they graduate from high school

  • Employ and train a young person part-time in your business

  • Meet the current and future skills need of your business

  • Give a young person realistic exposure to your industry

  • Employers may be eligible for government financial incentives

How does a School-Based Traineeship work?

A school-based apprenticeship is a team effort, between:

  • Employer (hires the student part time)

  • Registered Training Organisation (RTO) – provides accredited training

  • School – supports the adjusted work and study schedule for the student

  • Student – attends employment hours and school, completes accredited training component. (NB Parental consent required)

  • Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider (AASN) – helps with information on eligibility and helps the student and employer register the apprenticeship and apply for incentives (where available)
